Andy Wollen orchestrated stunt at JoCo Republican reorganization meeting

The reorganization meeting of the Johnson County Republican Party was held tonight.

The nomination for county party chair started out quite predictably:

  • Doug Patterson was nominated by State Rep Scott Schwab
  • Bruce Mayfield (GOP Club Treasurer) was nominated by Charles Smith

Then volunteer Tricia Larson, who said she normally works behind the scenes in the county party, nominated Andy Wollen to continue as the party chair.

Through the "luck" of the draw, Doug Patterson spoke first about how he would unite the local party.

Andy Wollen spoke second about why he decided he wanted to try to unite the county party and that he was the "moderate" between KRA and GOP Club:  Andy claimed Doug was on the right with KRA and KFL, and Bruce was on the left with GOP Club.  BUT, Andy was being less than sincere since his name was on the letterhead for GOP Club as recently as June 29th.

Bruce Mayfield (whose name is also in the letterhead of GOP Club as their Treasurer) complained about a recent lunch meeting with Doug Patterson and Mike Welton and tried to paint Mike Welton in bad light over a prolife issue.  Mayfield then withdrew his name and urged everyone to vote for Andy.  So, Andy was in the "middle" even though he was the GOP Club candidate from two years ago.

Andy suggested he wanted to continue pushing "power sharing" and suggested that everyone vote for him for Chair, and Doug Patterson for Secretary.  He suggested voting for a conservative for vice chair, a "moderate" treasurer, and splitting district delegate votes to half conservatives and half moderates.  What a scheme!  Only when they didn't have the votes did they suggest "power sharing" was a good idea.

The vote for chair, however, was decisive:

  • Patterson, 346
  • Mayfield, 1
  • Woolen, 186
  • Write-In:  Rich Becker, 1
